Let Your Light Shine

Initially, a person would evaluate this text and find that the focus is to challenge everyone to be kind to all and do only good. However, I would like to draw your attention to the natural progression of the text. Indulge me if you will. His message reads as follows”

  • “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  • Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

  • Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

  • Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

  • Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

  • Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

  • Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

  • Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  • Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”

I believe that when we look at this we can see at the beginning Jesus is preparing His followers for real life. If you break this down, you will see that there are times as a believer when you will feel:

  • Poor in Spirit. As you look at the poor, they often times have to do things that many others have too much pride for. There is NO room for pride in a Christian's life. We must always remain broken before the LORD and in turn, we are blessed for it.

  • You will mourn. I don't care how much you pray, there will be things in life you will lose. Many times it is at that point that Christ will meet you! It is in times of great loss that many of us have felt the undeniable power of God. He has comforted us.

  • You need to be meek. You need to be at peace with the will of God for your life.

  • If you're really “bout that Christ life” you're going to have to hunger and thirst for God. This is for those who understand the absolute need for Christ in their lives.

  • If you show mercy, you get mercy.

  • The pure in heart shall see God. Every now and then we have to evaluate our intentions to make sure we are doing things for the right reasons.

Then, in Matthew’s account of the Gospel there is a slight turn. Everything up until this point involves you controlling yourself. But at this point it seems to me that He's challenging the believer to control not just themselves but now to exert control over their situations.

  • Blessed are the peacemakers.

Then he starts to give the believer, who walks in authority, a dose of reality; and that is when you stand for Christ, folk aren’t going to like you. He says they are going to revile you and lie on you.

Then he says

  • but you are the salt of the Earth. He's now describing a fight.

  • I know salt preserves meat but in preserving meat it is fighting against the elements that exist to spoil the meat.

He then says

  • you are the light, don't hide your light let it shine! There is a fight between Light and darkness. Every time you turn on a light you literately chase darkens out of the room or area.

  • There is the simple fact that darkness and light cannot exist in the same space, at the same time. He's says when your light shines people will see your good works and glorify your father in heaven.

Your good works shouldn't all be hidden and won't always be received by everyone as good because we cannot ignore the fact that we are yet at war with Satan. Sometimes the darkness that you are repelling seems to society as acceptable or tolerable. However, we as Christians need to not be hateful but stand in the truth. As a Christian you can't go with the fads that everyone else go through; we must dare to be different! Satan has the world so fooled into thinking wrong is right and right is wrong. WE CANNOT FALL FOR IT. God is calling for those who will stand and be the light that wars against any and all kinds of darkness. This is why God is using and anointing a new breed of ministers. Men and Women of God who are not worried about getting the key to the city but want to use the keys of the kingdom. Women and Men that don't care if you like them. That say right is right & wrong is wrong. That stand on God’s word for truth and not tradition. That are going to let their light shine.
